Searching for an HIV Cure: 2012 ISHEID Advanced Program

ISHEID-marseilleThe International Symposium on HIV & Emerging Infectious Diseases will be held in Marseille (France), 23-25 May 2012. The program will address the issues of HIV reservoirs, HIV cure, acute HIV infection, together with Pre exposure prophylaxis, treatment of HIV/HCV coinfection. A keynote lecture is scheduled with Timothy Ray Brown, the "Berlin patient" and the hematologist, Doctor Gero Hütter who cured him.

 

ISHEID-2012This biennal edition of the ISHEID meeting is characterized by a driving theme, Searching for a Cure, and a lot of international leaders scheduled to talk.

Starting with a session on HIV prevention, the ISHEID will welcome Professor Robert Gallo (Baltimore, USA) and Professor Bernard Hirschel (Geneva, Switzerland).

Roy Gulick (New York, USA) will detail the new antiretrovirals in the pipeline of different companies, and Jean-Mickel Pawlotsky (Creteil, France) the next generation of anti-HCV drugs. 

An entire session organized under the auspices of the ANRS (French Agency for AIDS Research and Hepatitis) will address the issues of Human Rights and Access to Care.

On May 24, several sessions wil be devoted to HIV persistence and the ways to attack HIV reservoirs.

The models of HIV persistence will be addressed by Guido Silvestri (Atlanta, USA) and the mechanisms of HIV latency by Carine Van Lint (Gosselies, Belgium).

Mario Stevenson (Miami, USA) and Tae-Wook Chun (Bethesda, USA) will try to draw a roadmap towards an HIV cure.

Joseph Wong (San Francisco, USA) will review recent knowledge on HIV reservoirs and Santiago Moreno (Madrid, Spain) the strategies to activate them.

Jean-Pierre Routy (Montreal, Canada) will develop the benefits to treat HIV at acute infection.

The second day of the meeting will also contain a lecture by Professor Didier Raoult (Marseille, France) on the ways to cure intra-cellular infections.

This program will be soon complemented by several oral and poster presentations which are currently under review.
